Crapstone
Crapstone is a village on the western edge of Dartmoor, in the civil parish of Buckland Monachorum, West Devon. It is about 1 mile from Yelverton, 5 miles from Tavistock and 9 miles from Plymouth. The parish has five villages: Buckland Monachorum, Yelverton, Clearbrook, Crapstone and Milton Combe, and lies between Plymouth and Tavistock on the edge of the National Park.
During the Second World War Crapstone was the nearest village to RAF Harrowbeer, and RAF personnel were housed in the village. The Ministry of Defence kept a defence site in the village until the 1980s, when it was cleared and converted to housing. The village has a war memorial and a telephone box, both photographed for Wikimedia Commons.
The name regularly appears on lists of unusual place names. In 2007 villagers objected when a television advertisement said to show Crapstone was filmed somewhere else. Little dated history of the village itself has turned up, and nobody seems to be sure how it got its name.
