Cheriton Bishop is a village and civil parish in Mid Devon, about 10 miles west of Exeter and 6 miles south west of Crediton, on the northern edge of Dartmoor. Most of the village is in Mid Devon but part lies inside the National Park. The parish had 652 residents in 2011 and 754 in 2021. The name is Old English for a church settlement. The Bishops of Exeter were lords of the manor until it passed from them in the reign of Henry VIII, though when Bishop was added to the name is not clear.

St Mary's church has a 13th century chancel, with a nave, north aisle and tower added in the 15th century. The font is late 11th century limestone. The 16th century oak pulpit is carved with a mermaid and a sphinx, and one section of rood screen survives, with saints painted about 1520.

The hamlet of Cheriton Cross, on the old Exeter to Okehampton road, had a turnpike toll house in 1805. The Trafalgar Way site describes the Old Thatch Inn as a 16th century free house, though the age of the building is not confirmed here. The village has a primary school, a shop and post office, a doctor's surgery and the Woodleigh Coach House, a Grade II listed former coaching inn.
