Lettaford

Lettaford is a hamlet of only a few buildings in the lanes near North Bovey, and it is one of the most important small places on Dartmoor. It is a rare survival of a medieval moorland hamlet, and its buildings include Dartmoor longhouses: the distinctive local form in which the family lived at one end and the cattle at the other, sharing a single roof and a single cross passage.

Sanders, the best of them, is a longhouse of the sixteenth century that was rescued and repaired and is now let as a holiday cottage, which means it is cared for and lived in rather than preserved behind glass. The hamlet is not a visitor attraction and there is nothing to see beyond the buildings themselves, but for anyone interested in how people actually lived on this moor, a slow walk through Lettaford tells you more than a museum.
