Unenclosed hut circle settlement near Standon Down

This scheduled monument preserves the remains of a prehistoric settlement dating to the Bronze Age, when communities built permanent homes on Dartmoor's higher ground. The site consists of several stone hut circles, the foundations of roundhouses where people once lived, alongside field boundaries and enclosures that show how the landscape was managed and used for farming.

Today the site sits on open moorland, with the hut circles visible as low stone rings in the heather and grass. It forms part of a wider pattern of Bronze Age settlement across Dartmoor, evidence of a time when the moor supported a thriving population. Walking here, you see the ancient field systems still dictating the shape of the land, a palimpsest of human activity spanning thousands of years.
