Hut circle 320m north of Hart Tor

This is one of several stone hut circles forming an unenclosed settlement on the moorland north of Hart Tor. Built in the Bronze Age, these humble stone foundations once supported round houses with turf or thatch roofing, occupied by people who farmed and herded stock on Dartmoor when the climate was warmer and the moor less wooded than it is now.

Today, the site survives as low stone walls and rubble scattered across rough grassland, part of the archaeological palimpsest that covers much of central Dartmoor. Walking here, you are treading ground shaped by thousands of years of human presence, though the settlement itself now belongs only to the landscape and the hare.
