Stone alignment

This scheduled monument comprises a stone alignment and two round cairns set in a shallow valley on Walkhampton Common, alongside a length of reave, the characteristic field boundary system of Bronze Age Dartmoor. The alignment and cairns belong to the Bronze Age, when the moor was more extensively settled and farmed than it is today. Together they form part of the dense archaeological landscape that characterises this part of Dartmoor, telling of early farming communities and their organisation of the moorland.

The reave running through the site is a remnant of the extensive field systems that once divided the moorland into strips and plots. Walking here, you encounter these features within their working landscape, across rough moorland where Bronze Age shepherds once tended stock and worked the thin soils between Sharpitor and Leeden Tor.
