Simon Butler

Simon Butler is a founding director of the Dartmoor Trust, the charity formed in 1996, and is still listed among its trustees. Before the Trust he worked on digitisation projects in the publishing industry, and he consulted people at the Getty Archive in Los Angeles when the Trust was deciding how to build its own archive.

The Trustees settled on a digital photographic archive in 1998. Butler helped steer the web-based archive, developed with the University of Exeter, and the first collection digitised was Robert Burnard's late 19th-century photographs. He supported the first Dartmoor Century book (2000), which set historic images beside modern matching photographs.

His books include Dartmoor Light and Shadow (Halsgrove, 2024), Legendary Dartmoor Pubs & Inns (2016, published in association with the Dartmoor Trust Archive) and, with Brian Le Messurier, Dartmoor, New Horizons (Halsgrove, 2025).
