Prehistoric settlement near Challacombe Cross

Grid ref: SX 6971 8308

This scheduled monument preserves the earthwork remains of a prehistoric settlement and its associated field system, located on the eastern side of Challacombe Cross on Dartmoor. The site likely dates to the Bronze Age, when much of the high moor was actively farmed and inhabited. The layout reveals how people organised their settlement and land use in this upland landscape thousands of years ago.

Today the site survives as low banks and ditches in the moorland turf. The field boundaries and settlement structures are subtle features best read across the ground, particularly in certain light or after rain when shadows emphasize the earthworks. The site sits within the wider network of prehistoric remains that makes Dartmoor an exceptionally rich Bronze Age landscape, offering walkers insight into how extensively the moor was once used and shaped by human settlement.
