Pillow mound near Blackaton Cross

This pillow mound is one of several earthworks scattered across Trowlesworthy Warren, part of the open moorland south of Princetown. Pillow mounds, also called 'pillow-shaped mounds', are low, elongated ridges that were constructed to create suitable habitat for rabbits. They belong to the medieval period and later, when rabbit warrens were valuable resources managed as part of the moorland economy.

Today the mound sits as a subtle feature in the moorland terrain, easily overlooked unless you know what to look for. It forms part of a wider archaeological landscape that tells the story of how people have shaped and used Dartmoor's open ground for centuries.
