The linear and curved target railways on F Range are surviving structures from the Okehampton Artillery Range, a military training ground established on Dartmoor. These railways were engineered systems designed to move targets across the firing range, allowing gunners to practise at moving objectives. The remains today show the routes and curves of these railway lines carved into the moorland landscape.
As a Scheduled Monument, the site preserves evidence of Dartmoor's role in military training and development. The railways reflect the technical infrastructure that supported gunnery practice on the moor, and they form part of the broader heritage of the artillery range that has shaped this corner of Dartmoor for over a century.
