Medieval strip fields

This scheduled monument on the lower western slopes of Hamel Down preserves multiple phases of human activity across the centuries. Medieval strip fields show how the land was organised for farming, while evidence of tinworks records Dartmoor's long history of metal extraction. Prehistoric settlements and a cairn speak to much earlier occupation of this moorland landscape, suggesting these slopes have drawn people for thousands of years.

Today the site is visible as earthworks and features across open moorland. Walking here, you encounter the physical traces of how successive generations worked and lived on Dartmoor, layered one upon another in the turf and stone.
