This scheduled monument preserves the earthwork traces of a medieval farmstead deep in the Dartmoor landscape. The site lies on the higher moorland south east of Cold East Cross, in country that has been farmed and settled for centuries. What survives today are the subtle ground patterns and building platforms that mark where people once built their homes and worked the land.
The farmstead belongs to a wider pattern of medieval settlement across Dartmoor and the surrounding uplands. Such sites tell us how communities adapted to this demanding landscape, choosing their locations for water, shelter and access to grazing. Walking here, you can still read the archaeology in the contours of the ground, and understand something of the long relationship between people and the moor.
