Hut circles

South of Left Lake lie the earthwork remains of Bronze Age settlement and land use. The site comprises several hut circles, the stone foundations of roundhouses where families once lived, alongside an enclosure that may have served for livestock or ritual purposes. These low stone rings and banks are typical of the extensive prehistoric settlement pattern visible across Dartmoor's high moorland.

Today the site is modest in appearance, requiring patience and local knowledge to read the landscape. Walking here places you within the layered history of the moor, where Bronze Age communities adapted to upland life over three thousand years ago. The surrounding moorland and water sources remain much as they would have been, making this a compelling place to contemplate continuity and change on Dartmoor.
