Fatherford Woods occupies a wooded stretch of the East Okement valley just south-east of Okehampton. The striking stone viaduct that crosses above the woods once carried the London and South Western Railway main line and now supports the reopened Dartmoor Line. Beyond the woods, the river and valley become noticeably wilder as you follow paths climbing into the upper reaches of the East Okement.
