Dartmoor is at a Crossroads
2021
Written for the Summer 2021 issue of Dartmoor Magazine, this article uses the large wildfire near Tavy Cleave in February 2021 as a starting point to examine the underlying causes: decades of grazing policy change, the spread of ungrazed Molinia, and the build-up of fuel load on the moor. It goes on to consider the future for Dartmoor and its hill-farmers at the intersection of three national issues: biodiversity loss, climate change, and the post-Brexit overhaul of agricultural subsidy.
