Cist near Taw Head

This cist is a small stone burial chamber dating from the Bronze Age, when Dartmoor's high ground was more intensively settled and used. The cist would originally have been covered by a cairn or barrow, though little may remain visible today. It sits in the open moorland landscape south east of Taw Head, part of the dense cluster of prehistoric remains that make this part of Dartmoor archaeologically significant.

Like many of Dartmoor's ancient monuments, the cist speaks to a time when the moor supported farming communities who buried their dead in stone-lined graves. Visiting requires cross-moor walking and navigation skills. The site's remote location and the moorland surroundings that have changed little in millennia give some sense of the Bronze Age landscape, though the details of what survives on the ground can be subtle.
