Cairnfield near Cox Tor

This scheduled monument consists of a cairnfield, a scatter of stone mounds built over Bronze Age burials, alongside two ruined stone hut circles. The site sits on open moorland and represents the enduring marks left by communities who lived and died on Dartmoor thousands of years ago. Cairnfields like this one are among the most common Bronze Age remains on the moor, evidence of burial practices and land use across a wide area.

Today the site appears as low stone features in the heather and grass, easily missed unless you know what to look for. The hut circles, roughly circular foundations of ancient dwellings, stand nearby as a reminder that Bronze Age Dartmoor was not empty wilderness but a lived landscape.
