Cairn with a cist near Willings Walls Reave

This is a cairn, a mound of stones raised over a cist or stone burial chamber, likely built during the Bronze Age when burial monuments were widespread across Dartmoor. The cist would originally have held cremated remains or an inhumation, sealed beneath the accumulated stones of the cairn itself.

Today it sits within the complex archaeological landscape east of Willings Walls Reave, a Bronze Age field boundary that still marks the moorland. Like many of Dartmoor's burial monuments, it offers a tangible link to the people who inhabited and shaped the moor in the second millennium BC.
