Cairn 500m NNW of Archerton

This scheduled monument is a cairn, a burial mound of stone built during the Bronze Age when Dartmoor's high ground was more intensively settled and used. The mound sits on open moorland north-northwest of Archerton, in a landscape dotted with similar ancient structures that speak to patterns of settlement and death rituals stretching back three or four thousand years.

Visitors approaching from the valley will find a low stone mound among the heather and granite, unremarkable at first glance but part of a wider network of cairns, settlements and ceremonial sites scattered across the moor. Its age and origin are marked by its simple form: stone piled on stone as a lasting monument to the dead.
