Partially enclosed hut circle settlement near Merrivale Bridge

This scheduled monument near Merrivale Bridge shows layers of Dartmoor's past. The partially enclosed stone hut circles suggest Bronze Age settlement, while a round cairn sits within or nearby the same landscape. Later, in post medieval times, a farmstead occupied the site, and evidence of millstone production and stone cutting pits shows how people once worked the moorstone itself.
What remains today are the foundations and scattered stones of these different periods, spread across moorland. The site lies in country typical of Dartmoor's central uplands, where Bronze Age communities chose their settlements carefully and later generations continued to use and reshape the same ground.
